Sampson Creek Preserve Cultural History
Southern Oregon has a rich human history, as does the land within the Sampson Creek Preserve. Native American archeological sites, remnants of past homesteads established by early settlers, and the old, abandoned Barron Mine begin to tell some of these stories — but many specific details about the people, activities, and events that influenced this area have been lost through the years.
In an attempt to honor the cultural relationship with this landscape, we plan to research and document the historical events and Euro-American settlement of the Sampson Creek Preserve. Chronicling the area’s human history will help us understand how the past has influenced the preserve’s biological values and in turn inform future research and stewardship activities.
