Mark Headley
FOUNDER
Mark is a native of California with roots in the Pacific Northwest where his father’s family traveled by wagon train in 1854. He has enjoyed a life long love of nature, having been exposed to protected wild areas from a young age. While attending UC Santa Cruz in the late 70s, Mark became a student of Maestro Charles Selberg and a long friendship was established. After retiring from a successful career in international asset management, Mark has devoted much of his time protecting wild places of the Western United States and also picked up a sword again at the West Berkeley Fencing Club.
Maia Black
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Maia Black is the founding Executive Director of the Selberg Institute. She graduated from Southern Oregon University with a degree in Business Management with an emphasis in Sustainability Leadership. She developed a passion for ecology and conservation at a very young age in her home state of Idaho, where she spent her childhood exploring rugged mountains, wild rivers and alpine lakes. She relocated to Southern Oregon in 1990 and raised her son on a small homestead just south of Ashland. Prior to taking on the role as ED for the Selberg Institute, she owned and operated a successful cleaning and property management business in Ashland for 13 years. Her integrity, passion for preservation, enthusiasm for learning, and strong connection to place make her well suited as a leader and land steward.
Bo Steinert
MAINTENANCE DIRECTOR
Bo Steinert is the Maintenance Director of the Selberg Institute. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 2001 with a degree in Environmental Design and a degree in Construction Science. Over the years, he has gained valuable experience and extensive knowledge as a project leader and manager, providing field supervision, instruction and a variety of design services. He grew up in Idaho where he spent his youth skiing, sailing, and fishing and then relocated to Santa Barbara before heading to College Station. Bo has lived in the Ashland area for the last 7 years and with his knack for innovative thinking, and strong work ethic, he has become a valuable asset to the Institute and the Preserves.
Evan Frost
ECOLOGICAL CONSULTANT
Evan Frost is a conservation biologist, ecologist and botanist with twenty five years of experience at the interface of science, land management and conservation in the Pacific states. He earned his masters in biology/botany from Humboldt State University in 1990 and, previous to establishing Wildwood Consulting in 1998, worked for the US Forest Service, University California-Santa Cruz and Conservation Northwest. In his capacity as both ecologist and conservation practitioner, he has been involved with a wide diversity of projects and initiatives, ranging from conservation planning and design, large-scale biodiversity assessments and many public land management projects. Evan has lived in the Rogue Valley for 17 years.
